Field trip this Wednesday

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah!

I hope that you have all had a peaceful and restful weekend.

Jacaranda

This coming Wednesday 12 December inshaAllah, Grade 3 and Grade 4 will be exploring Jacaranda, a society that grows and sells exotic plants.  You may have seen the small plant place that this company has in Mermoz, next to the Fondation Sonatel. However, the main location is in Rufisque and there, we will visit and explore the many hectares of plant life grown there.

We have been learning about plants in Science class for the last month and a half, and this is the best culmination to end this chapter!

Students will be given a form to fill out on Monday or on Tuesday inshaAllah. They will obligatory need to bring that paper back signed to be authorised to go on the field trip.

Religious Night

This greatly anticipated event will be postponed to January 5th inshaAllah.  During this night, students and parents listen, learn, and pray together in a spirit of conviviality and brotherhood.  We hope that this delay will permit us to better organise the activities to have the desired results inshaAllah.

We will be asking you to participate! You will be hearing from us soon inshaAllah!

Have a great week!

Science Projects

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah!

I hope all of you had a very peaceful weekend!

Students in the Faraasha class have started doing Science Projects. These projects are to help them get better acquainted with the annual Science Fair competition at IQRA, and also to heighten their curiosity about things around them through inquiry.

The first experiment was intitled:

Do cut flowers live longer in salt water or in sugar water?

The whole class, except Ndatte Ndaw, thought that the salt water would make the cut flowers live longer. Why did they think this? They will have to explain it in their project reports, because they were all proved wrong!

The experiment was done in class in pairs. The flowers were kept on the balcony. The students were asked to observe their flowers and record their observations each day for 10 days.

The students need to give me the report of this Science project in poster form inshaAllah this week. I made a poster of the report, and they can understand, and follow how it should be done, by looking at it, and at the individual notes that they made.  They have also other lab experiment reports in their note books.

Students will have a science project to do every month inshaAllah.

Art Projects

A big takbir to Ndeye Maguette, Aminata Charlotte and Abdoulaye Fall. They made the best mini flower vases in Art last week! The art work was judged by Ustadh Ahmed, and mashaAllah, they were all very pretty!

We are doing Concentric Circle Patterns this week.

Art work is usually left on display in the class or in the hallways. Visitors to the school greatly admire the work that the students are doing. The students also take great pride in their work. I will be returning Art work inshaAllah on December 20, the last day of school before the break.

Have a great week!

This week in Faraasha

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah!

Yesterday was a Professional Development Day for the staff at IQRA. During these days, administration and staff elaborate on better means to improve key points associated with a conducive school atmosphere. Workshops, modules, teaching strategies and assessments are also learnt, practised and evaluated during this time.

The end of the semester is near

As you already know, the end of the first semester is this coming Friday inshaAllah, Nov 30th.  Students must hand in all late homework if they still want to receive credit. They have already started simple evaluations that assess how much they have assimilated so far.

Thiadiaye

This important chapter in IQRA's history started when certain classes went out to this tiny village close to Mbour to see traditional pottery being done. The village is composed of Christians and Muslims. One of Mme Sarr's housegirls is from this village. She left the village as Anna the Christian, and returned as Aisha, a fully covered, practising Muslim.

Okay, so she didn't really look like this, but close enough. Let's continue the story.

As this transformation amazed many of her family members, the talk was less centered on pottery and became axed on religion.
Ustadh Ahmed, an American Imam, teacher at IQRA, and potter himself, finally, after talking to the village, softened their hearts to Islam, and by Allah's grace, 16 women took Shahadah after he and the IQRA school arrived, and then 5 more before they left the village that day.
There has been a relationship with this village ever since.
They however, need people to help them learn the religion. They need nurturing, just like a baby depends on his mother for nurturing. They are not looking for just words. They need people to accompany them to make them become practising, striving, Muslims.
Ustadh Ahmed and company, have been going periodically to the village. His first trip, since returning from the United States will be this Saturday, December 1st inshaAllah.
If you have any food donations that you will like to give, it will be extremely appreciated.
IQRA has been helping this village as well, by giving food and clothing donations every time we have gone there.
If you would like to involve yourself in this Community Service Project, please contact Ustadh Ahmed directly: 77 754 40 87

There will be an end of semester exam in each subject area. Depending on the subject, the exam may count as much as 20% of the final grade. The exact percentage can be found on Engrade.

We are very closely working with those students that need extra attention so that they succeed this semester inshaAllah.

This week in Faraasha

Assalamu alaikum!

We are all wishing Mme Sarr a speedy recovery. She was in a car accident over the weekend. May Allah heal her, and pardon her sins, ameen.

Lessons

Students must review the work that they are given each day. Not only lessons must be understood, but concepts must be memorized. Some concepts may be learnt by practice and exercises, but there are always things that need to be memorized. For example, in Science, students should know that plants are classified into plants with seeds, and plant that do not have seeds...

In Deenyat class yesterday, most students of the Faraasha class did not memorize the first two lines of the du'ah that we say during the prayer; when we sit after the prostration, at tayiyyatu lillahi (TASHAHUD). Prayer is not complete if you do not know how to perform it. This component of prayer is very important.

Students are also not taking the time to memorize correctly their Surahs. If they are reciting with minor mistakes, they have not memorized correctly the verse. These words are the words of Allah. We have no right to add on to them or deform them.  The Quran is the easiest thing to lose. We all should be learning and reviewing our Book.

Sondages/Survey forms

There are many surveys that did not come back to IQRA. If you are still holding onto it, please turn it in immediately. We will need this feedback to complete our self study towards accreditation inshaAllah.

Cahier de texte

All students must have a cahier de texte. Each day, they will write their homework in their notebooks and the cahier de texte. Parents and guardians must sign each day as witnesses that their child has completed the homework on a given day.

Excellent week!

Aneesa Nawab and Souleymane Ndaw battled to get the ticket to go to the Finals. Finally Aneesa won by spelling correctly the word that Souleymane didn't AND spellling another word correctly.

On the French side, we had a long but exciting battle between Fatima Zahra Diouf and Thiaba Kadam. They spelt more than 20 words with finally Fatima Zahra Diouf pulling through to represent the Frenchies.

Gouter partager and Eid Gift Exchange

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah!

This Tuesday Oct 23, inshaAllah, we will be having a joint class Gouter Partager (Grade 3 and Grade 4). The students can bring their snacks to share communely with their classmates.

Also, the Eid is a very special occasion that should be different from all others. It is only one of 2 occassions that Allah subhana wa ta'ala has given us to celebrate.

Families from many countries, often exchange greetings and gifts during the Eid day. Needless to say, from a child's perspective, Eid went farther than just eating and drinking. Of course, Eid is the day that people who have very little food can partake in the Eid feasts that are usually organized by community.

For those children who would like to, and have permission from parents, we are having a gift exchange between Grade 3 and Grade 4 (boys between boys, and girls between girls).

Each child will draw a name from a bag and give that student a small gift. This gift can be something creative or was made by the student himself. If the gift is bought, it should cost less than 3000fcfa.

Students will draw names tomorrow inshaAllah.
